Job Description:

This position is Remote. Candidates will be considered based on their qualifications and the candidate's ability to work from an approved work location.  Although the location is flexible, AEP does not have a presence in all states and localities.  The following locations are NOT currently approved for this position: AK, CO, CT, DE, HI, IA, ID, KS, MA, ME, MS, ND, NH, NJ, NM, NV, NY, OR, RI, SD, UT, VT, WY, US Territories or international work locations. AEP will consider qualified candidates who are willing to relocate to an approved work location, at the candidate's expense, provided the relocation can be completed within a timeframe that meets AEP's staffing needs.

The Infrastructure Engineer is a part of a larger team that delivers high quality Computer, Network, Storage and End-User Infrastructure technology solutions and on-going support to the business.  They independently complete and lead infrastructure project assignments and plan, research, evaluate, design, and engineer the enterprise's technology infrastructure.  Furthermore, they provide technical support and troubleshooting, cost estimates, justifications, and recommendations and   produce technical documentation, support, and configuration.  They help manage, plan, and maintain technical platforms including upgrading systems. They also help monitor system performance and install and configure hardware.  

The Infrastructure Engineer is responsible for collaborating with other Job Families such as Project Managers, Architects, Solution Engineers, Technicians, and Business Analysts  to deliver consistent, reliable technology solutions that leverage AEP's technology standards, architectures and best practices.


Working independently, responsibilities include the following related to Computer, Network, Storage, Cloud and End-User infrastructure: 

  • Performs and leads complex infrastructure  project assignments.

  • Plans, researches, evaluates, designs and analyzes performance of complex infrastructure systems

  • Provides advanced technical support and analysis, operation, administration, and troubleshooting activities

  • Adheres and advocates change management policies, incident management and trouble response scenarios

  • Prepares cost estimates, justifications, application requirements, alternative solutions, and technical recommendations

  • Leads, facilitates, and coordinates work activities of others within the work group, team or department

  • Prepares technical documentation including procedures, manuals, reports and standards                                

  • Reviews and adheres to budgeting and approval processes while partaking in annual and project planning    

  • May provide training and mentoring, as well as work direction, to others on the team

  • Understands and follows policies, practices, procedures, standards, and rules of the company and complies with the regulations and procedures required by external agencies

  • Coordinates and monitosr work activities, using approved applications and tools, for projects as required to perform routine engineering tasks.

  • Performs documentation of project work using established guidelines

  • Learns AEP's organizational structure and the specific role and responsibility of their individual organizational unit.

  • Adheres to AEP's budgeting and approval processes as part of annual planning and project planning.

  • Performs routine engineering activity with minimal direction from higher level employees

  • Utilizes basic techniques to perform analysis associated with the resolution of routine technical problems

  • Applies economic analysis techniques in project development and approval

  • Demonstrates knowledge of AEP networks, components and facilities by enabling more efficient and comprehensive responses to projects and problems

  • Follows the standard workflow for routine engineering projects.




Infrastructure Engineer Sr. 

Education: Bachelor's degree in computer science, engineering, or related technical field is required. 

Experience: 5 years of relevant work experience is required.

An equivalent combination of education and related experience may be considered.

Education: Bachelor's degree in computer science, engineering, or related technical field is required.

Experience: 7 years of relevant work experience is required.

An equivalent combination of education and related experience may be considered.

  • Possesses intermediate level knowledge of communications technologies and inter-networking principles.

  • Demonstrates competency in analytical techniques necessary to handle assignments of moderate complexity. (e.g., by dividing the problem into component steps, and performing the analysis necessary to complete each step.)

  • Exhibits understanding for pertinent telecom equipment, materials, systems and business processe

  • Exhibits ability to understand interrelationships between systems and component equipment

  • Demonstrates ability to analyze and recommend enhancements to business processes

  • Collaborates with others within the work group, department, or other corporate entity as necessary to complete routine activities

  • Provides cross-training to other employees as assigned

  • Initiates corrective action when project objectives are not being met

  • Communicates effectively, both verbally and in writing. Demonstrates the ability to extrapolate beyond known facts to reach logical conclusions
