Summary Position serves as a Medical Technician responsible for the application, modification and adaptation of analytical methods and procedures in the performance of a variety of tests/examinations of human tissue, fluids and/or other substances in the clinical laboratory. This position is located in the Peach Springs Health Center, Peach Springs, AZ., and reports to the Supervisory Clinical Laboratory Scientist. Responsibilities Performance of standardized procedures i accordance with established methodology manuals, technical references and precedents. Interprets and evaluates results of tests/examinations in process and upon completion in order to recognize anticipated reactions and departures from the norm. Provides guidance, direction and training to ancillary technicians and other personnel when designed as "in charge" of assigned sections/specializations. Exercises judgement to locate and select the most appropriate guides and references to apply for specific purposes. Sets up, operates and/or utilizes appropriate equipment, instruments, containers and other devices and materials to perform qualitative and quantitative analysis of substances. Qualifications To qualify for this position, your resume must state sufficient experience and/or education, to perform the duties of the specific position for which you are applying. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer and part time experience. BASIC REQUIREMENT(S): Individual Occupational Requirements Specialized Experience: For positions at GS-4 and above: (a) Technical medical laboratory support work such as performing laboratory tests and examinations (chemical, microbiologic, hematologic and blood banking) and preparing reports of findings or (b) technical support work in a closely related field, e.g., biological laboratory technician work, that required application of the methods and techniques for the position to be filled. In addition to the Basic Requirements, you must also meet the Minimum Qualifications stated below. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: GS-6: Your resume must demonstrate at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-5 grade level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following type of work and/or tasks: Performing a variety of standardized tests and examinations under normal technical supervision; following written procedures which provide detailed instructions on each step of the assigned test and examinations including the techniques, procedures, stains, reagents, chemicals, temperatures, measurements, controls use and observe, machine settings, etc.; performing phlebotomy services; determining correct blood specimen for tests ordered; and adhering to quality control procedures. GS-7: Your resume must demonstrate at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-6 grade level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following type of work and/or tasks: A thorough understanding and extensive knowledge of the methods, techniques and practices appropriate to medical technology and their practical application to clinical laboratory work. Skill in calibrating and operating analytical instruments sufficient to independently perform recurring tests and analyses. Understanding of related disciplines such as microbiology, chemistry, physiology, anatomy and their relationship to medical technology; OR Education: Completed 1 year (18 semester hours) of graduate education that is directly related to the position to be filled; OR Combination of education and specialized experience: When combined fully meet the minimum qualifications for this position. The total percentage equals at least 100 percent to qualify for this GS-07 grade level. Time In Grade Federal employees in the competitive service are also subject to the Time-In-Grade Requirements: Merit Promotion (status) candidates must have completed one year of service at the next lower grade level.
